MusicIndiaOnline on Linux
I’m on Linux, Ubuntu 6.06 (”Dapper Drake”) to be precise.
If you are having trouble getting Music India Online to work, here are some things you can do:
- After their Trident music player has launched and complained about “Methods missing” (or loads, but clicking on “Play” doesn’t do anything), right-click in the Player’s frame, This Frame → View Frame Source, search for the .smil file (not the blank.smil, the other one). Now you have the URL of the SMIL file, and can open it using, e.g., Real Player’s “Open Location” with that URL. This should always work.
- The above is painful, and Greasemonkey can automate it. Try this script by Supratim (see comments). I haven’t tried this myself.
- It’s possible that all you need to do is install a newer version of Real Player. One of the commenter says that it’s a bug in realplayer 10.0.x, and you can install a Realplayer 10.1.x. You can get one from here. (If you can get it through your distro’s package management system, it would be safer and less messier, of course, but..) Friends have told me that doing this is sufficient to get musicindiaonline working.
- Going further, you can configure Firefox to make it use an external handler (realplayer) for streaming. Set network.protocol-handler.external.rtsp=true and set network.protocol-handler.app.rtsp to your realplayer binary. See the commenter’s page.
For some reason, their “Radio” section (radio.musicindiaonline.com) works perfectly.
Please leave any further suggestions in the comments.
Thanks. Was helpful!

Update yor Real Player browser plugin — just (re)install Real Player.

It was the latest version of Real Player that I was using…
In fact, I had found that using the older version of Real Player usually worked better.
Anyway, I’ll try again when I get home next… update on Nov 11 or 12.

Hi Team,
This is a fabulous site. We can listen to all the Indian Classical vocals and intruments online. All of these are really good.
One suggestion: Kindly keep on updating the classisical collection for vocals and intsruments. You can remove the old ones from the list.

Hi Shreevatsa and Animesh,
A slightly easier way to do that.
Open Firefox from Konsole (or some other Terminal). Open Raaga/Musicindia/Smashits/….
you will see a segmentation fault in the Konsole. it will also have a BIG URL with .RA/.SMIL/…
copy that URL and paste it in your Firefox Window. Ask it to open the URL with RealPlayer. ….. DONE [:)]

Aha! Finally
Thank you guys! Was banging my head for the past few months to make it work.
Also, the link works for “play all” selection too. The same link play all the songs in the album just like a play list and I can save it as favorite link with album name.
Thanks again guys..such a relief for me.

I got it working perfectly on Suse 10.2 using the instructions from this site:
http://paul.rutgers.edu/~spravin/howto-realplay-embedded.txt
You can edit the config file by typing about:config in the URL typein box.
Right click to to get the menu for adding or modifying a config line.

I have been sucessful in getting it play under solaris and redhat 9.0.
In solaris it is just the mime type . Since netscape was the only browser supported then.
same was the case with redhat 9.0

edit->preference->contents->manage file types
does not list realplayer to handle rm ram rpm file.
How to add it there. If this can be added I guess we can play musicindiaonline.

Did you guys try http://www.hummaa.com for streaming indian music. The great thing about it is it has flash players that increase its performance manifold. In addition to that its super cool look and awesome audio quality deserves a kudos!!!

I have created a greasemonkey script to solve this problem. The script changes the music links so that it directly opens the .smil file bypassing their player. you can then open the file with realplayer through firefox.
